DOCUSATE - ORAL

(DOCK-you-sate) 

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Colace, Dialose, DSS, Surfak 

USES:  This medication helps fludis to mix with the stool to keep them from becoming hard or dry.  It is used to treat constipaiton. <br/><br/>

HOW TO USE:  Swallow capsules and tbalets whole with a full glass of water or juice.  The liquid and syrup froms must be given in 6 to 8 ounces of milk or juice to prevent throat irritation. Relief is usually obtained in 1 to 3 days after first dose. <br/><br/>

SIDE EFFECTS:  This medication may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated throat (liquid and syrup forms).  If these effects contniue or become bothersome, inform your doctor. Notify your docotr if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bowel movements. Frequent use of laxatives can cause dehydration and loss of essential nutrients.  Symptoms inculde muscle cramps, muscle weakness or dizziness.  Maintain an adequate fluid intake while using this medication. <br/>If you notice other effcets not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.  

PRECAUTIONS:  Do not take aspirin (unless prescribed by your doctor) or mineral oil while taking stool softeners. <br/>If you're pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take over-the-counter stool sofetners (or any other nonprescription medication) without obtaining your doctor's advice.  <br/>

DRUG INTERACTIONS:  This drug is not recommneded for use with mineral oil. <br/><br/>Ask your doctor or pahrmacist for more details.  <br/><br/>Tell your docotr of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially aspirin.   

OVERDOSE:  If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison cotnrol center or emergency room immediately.   

NOTES:  Laxatives should only be used temporarily until normal bowel habits return.   Prolonged use can lead to laxative dependence. <br/><br/>To preevnt constipation: drink 4 to 6 glasses of water daily, include bulk or roughage in your diet, and exercise regularly. <br/>

MISSED DOSE:  If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule.  Do not "double-up" the dose to cacth up. <br/>

STORAGE:  Sotre at room temperature away from sunlight and moisture.]]></description>
