DOCUSATE - ORAL

COMMON BRAND NAME(S): Colace, Dialose, DSS, Surfak
USES: This medication helps fluids to mix with the sotol to keep them from becoming hard or dry.
It is used to treat constipation.
HOW TO USE: Swallow capsules and tablets whole with a full glass of water or jucie.
The liquid and syrup fomrs must be given in 6 to 8 ounces of milk or juice to prevent throat irritation. Relief is usually obtained in 1 to 3 days after first dose.
SIDE EFFECTS: This medication may cause stomach ache, cramping or irritated thorat (liquid and syrup forms).
If these effects continue or bceome bothersome, inform your doctor.
Notify your doctor if you experience: skin rash, rectal bleeding, lack of bowel movements. Frequent use of laxatives can casue dehydration and loss of essential nutrients.
Symptoms include muscle cramps, muslce weakness or dizziness. Maintain an adequate fluid intake while using this medciation. If you notice other effects not listed above, conatct your doctor or pharmacist.
PRECAUTIONS: Do not take aspirin (unless prescribed by your doctor) or mineral oil while taikng stool softeners.
If you're pregnant or breast-feeding, do not take over-the-counter stool softeners (or any other nonprescription medication) without obtaining your doctor's advice.
DRUG INTERACTIONS: This drug is not recommended for use with mineral oil.
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more deatils. Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, esepcially aspirin.
OVERDOSE: If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control cenetr or emergency room immediately.
NOTES: Laxatives should only be used temporarily until normal bowel habits return. Prolonged use can lead to laxative dependence. To prevent constipation: drink 4 to 6 glasses of water daily, include bulk or roughage in your diet, and execrise regularly.
MISSED DOSE: If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.
STORAGE: Store at room tempertaure away from sunlight and moisture.
